Choosing The Right Flat Roofing System For Leyland Clients
We install some of the most reliable modern flat roofing systems available today. The best option for your property depends on the roof’s design, condition and how you use the space. We’ll always explain your choices clearly, including costs, so you can make the right decision with confidence.
A modern upgrade of the traditional felt system, high-performance felt is a strong, layered solution with a long and proven track record in the UK. It’s especially suited to roofs with lots of details, such as extensions, porches, garages, refurbishments and repair projects.
EPDM Rubber Roofing
EPDM is a durable, low-maintenance single-ply membrane that works brilliantly on simpler roof shapes. It’s ideal if you want a clean finish and long-term performance with minimal fuss.
GRP Fibreglass Roofing
GRP provides a seamless, smart-looking surface, making it a popular choice for domestic garages and extensions. It performs best where the roof deck is smooth and level, allowing for a high-quality finish.

Main Types of Flat Roofing
Here’s a brief over view of each one.
1) High-Performance Felt: SBS and APP polymer-modified systems
When people say “felt” these days, they often mean torch-on modified bitumen, not the thin, basic mineral felt that gave the category a bad name years ago. Modern systems use bitumen membranes modified with polymers — mainly SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) and APP (atactic polypropylene) — to improve flexibility, durability, and resistance to cracking.
Why high-performance felt remains popular.
High Tensile Felt Roofing essentially this looks like the traditional “felt roof” but is incredibly durable. Unlike traditional felt, High Tensile will stretch and form with your roof. This is important as roofs tend to expand and contract with weather changes. Over the years traditional felts tear and leak. Built up felt roofing is one of our specialities.
It’s great for complex detailing: If you’ve got lots of corners, upstands, or awkward junctions, felt systems can be excellent because they’re designed to be built up and dressed in.
It has a proven track record with a long history of modified bitumen in UK roofing with well-documented materials backed by certification.
2) Single Ply Systems: EPDM synthetic rubber membranes
If you’ve heard someone say “rubber roof”, they usually mean EPDM. It’s a synthetic sheet membrane supplied in large pieces, which is handy because fewer seams generally means fewer opportunities for water to find a way in. EPDM is also known for coping well with UV exposure and temperature swings — a big deal in our “four seasons in a day” climate.
RubberBond EPDM synthetic sheet rubber membrane is a material that will not tear, split or crack, Is unaffected by ozone and UV radiation and can easily accommodate building movement.
3) GRP: Glass Reinforced Polyester (fibreglass roofing)
GRP (often just called “fibreglass”) is a liquid resin applied over a prepared deck and reinforced with glass fibre matting, forming a hard, seamless surface once cured. It’s particularly common on domestic flat roofs where people want a clean finish and crisp edges. GRP can be a good solution for smaller roofs.
It offers a seamless waterproof layer: No sheet joints across the field area of the roof, which many homeowners find reassuring. The finished surface can look sharp, especially around trims and upstands. And it has quite a long life when installed correctly.

Flat Roofing Company – Case Study
Progress Housing: Burneside, Kendal
Paramount Roofing has over 25 years of experience providing Progress Housing with all manner of flat roof repairs and rebuilds on houses, bungalows, dormer bungalows, extensions, flats, commercial & industrial properties, sheds, garages and outhouses all around the North West and other parts of the UK.
This semi-detached house in Kendal, has a single story concrete flat roof structure over an auxiliary room which the tenant had flagged with bad condensation issues. The roof was last recovered 23 years subsequently had several repairs carried out to it.
After a review of the roof’s history and site inspection, Paramount determined that the provision of a “warm roof” solution would provide a suitable remedy by isolating the concrete roof from cold external temperatures.
Defective felt covering was stripped from the roof and bituminous primer applied.
The “warm roof” was achieved by constructing of a 50mm vapour controlled insulation layer using Eco-Therm boards which provide a thin and durable insulation solution for flat roofs. A proprietary torch on cover was then applied over the insulation layer.
Capping sheets, raised upstands on the perimeter of the roof, a new gutter and fascia boards were installed to complete the installation.
