Why Liquid Roofing Works So Well for Refurbishment
Liquid systems are designed to bond directly to many common roof surfaces, including felt, metal, concrete and asphalt. Once cured, they create a flexible, fully bonded membrane that prevents water ingress — even around awkward details, penetrations and plant areas.
This makes them particularly suitable for refurbishing ageing or leaking roofs where full replacement would be disruptive, costly or impractical.
Key Advantages
Seam-Free Waterproofing – The cured coating forms one continuous layer, removing the weak points associated with joints and overlaps.
Ideal for Complex Roof Areas – Liquid systems easily follow the shape of upstands, roof lights, vents, pipework and other detailing often found on commercial buildings.
Overlay Capability – In many cases, we can apply the system directly over the existing roof, reducing waste, labour and disruption to your operations.
Durability & Longevity – Depending on the system specified, life expectancy can range from 10 to 30 years, providing a cost-effective lifecycle solution.
Fast Installation & Rapid Weather Resistance – Many products become rain-resistant quickly, which helps reduce programme delays during unpredictable UK weather.
Low-Odour Options Available – Certain systems are suitable for use on occupied buildings, including schools, healthcare settings and offices, where odour and disruption must be minimised.
How the System Is Installed
Every project starts with a detailed roof survey so we can recommend the most suitable specification for your building and usage.
A typical installation includes:
1. Surface Preparation – Cleaning and preparing the existing roof to ensure proper adhesion
2. Priming (where required) – Applying a primer to suit the substrate
3. Base Coat Application – Applying the first layer of liquid coating
4. Reinforcement – Embedding a polyester or fibreglass reinforcement mat at joints, details and high-stress areas
5. Top Coat Application – Finishing with a durable, UV-stable top layer
6. Curing – The system reacts with moisture in the air to form a tough, flexible waterproof membrane
Throughout the process, our team works to agreed schedules and safe systems of work to minimise impact on your operations.

Case Study – Friar’s House, Coventry
Friars House, Manor House Drive, Coventry, CV1 2TE, is an 11-storey office block built in the late 1980s and comprehensively refurbished, offering a total floor space of 51,223 sq ft. The client reported that the roof of this property had received a number of roof patch repairs to stop water leaks. However, the increasing occurrence of further leaks prompted the client to pursue investigatory work and a full roof waterproofing works
Paramount were engaged on this project to carry out the following processes:
- Inspect failing roof water tightness
- Recommend appropriate remedial solution
- Carry out remedial works
Inspection
An electronic leak detection survey was carried out by Paramount which revealed a large quantity of leaks across the whole roof structure which featured a significant number of services obstructions like air conditioning and a suspended access cradle machine trackway.
This inspection revealed that it was uneconomical to continue with ad hoc maintenance roof patch repairs.
Remedial Solution
Given the state of the roof and installation issues, Paramount assessed a number of different solutions and recommended the application of The Hydrostop EU AH-25 liquid waterproofing system which is a “wet-on-wet”, cold applied liquid waterproofing product that’s fully reinforced with a polyester fabric. AH-25 is free of solvents and isocyanates, fast-curing, easy to apply, delivers superior performance and has significant advantages over conventional liquid roofing systems.
Remedial Works
Risk Assessment & Method Statements
The roof of this property presented many installation challenges arising from the presence of
Telephone masts, HVAC ancillary services and suspended access window cleaning cradle perimeter track support fixings.
In order to apply the system effectively, every single mounting platform for each telephone mast and item of ancillary services equipment had to be released vertically their mountings and jacked up using air bags in order to apply the liquid membrane and substrate properly.
In addition, every single 1 metre upstand support for the suspended access track also had to be dissembled, the AH-25 system applied and ancillary services and track upstands remounting on top of the new roof covering.
In total, a very wide range of service device fixings and over 150 suspended access track upstands had to be lifted.
Risk assessment and method statements reflected this challenge in order to prepare effectively for a successful installation.
Roof Preparation and Temperature Measurement
The existing roof covering was subjected to a high pressure power wash and the temperature of the roof was monitored regularly to ensure subsequent application of the system after preparation between set temperature levels.
AH-25 System Training
Before any on site work could start Graham Cowburn and Patrick Booth had to attend and pass a training course conducted by AH-25 manufacturers, SIG Design and Technology. AH-25 can only be applied by approved contractors and installer training covering theory and practical skills is carried out including a test at the end if the course. Graham and Patrick both received successful course completion certificates.
AH-25 System Installation
Paramount then carried out application of the AH-25 polyester fabric and liquid waterproofing membrane system in strict compliance with the manufacturers guidelines across the 1000 square metre area over a period of 7 days. of the. Periodic inspections were also carried out by SIG personnel.
